  1. The Economic Empowerment of Tea Farming

This year, Kenyan tea farmers are poised to achieve a historic milestone, with record-breaking payouts on the horizon. A significant KES 44.15 billion is set for disbursement for the financial year that ended on 30th June. The sum will be shared among 600,000 farmers, associated with Kenya Tea Development Agency Limited’s 54 factories. Farmers are experiencing a 7.6% increase in revenue from KES 62.89 billion to KES 67.7 billion compared to the same period last year. Improvement of international tea prices is partially responsible for the growth in revenue for Kenyan tea farmers. For example, the price for one kilogram of tea during the period was recorded at Ksh 341, a significant rise from Ksh 311 in the previous period.

Other factors that favored tea farmers earnings were

  • Rise in volume of sales
  • Effective and cost-sensitive management styles
  • Advantageous foreign exchange climate

These factors have been so favorable that despite a drop in the production of green leaf tea the sector still saw a rise in revenue. For the year that ended in June, green leaf production stood at 1.145billion kgs, a drop compared to the 1.254 billion kgs from the previous period. The volume recorded was an all time low since the year 2019, and still put more money in Kenyan tea farmers pocket.

Tea farming in Kenya isn’t just about tradition; it’s a lucrative path to financial empowerment. Join us as we delve into the economic prowess of tea farming, spotlighting its transformative potential. From small-scale growers experiencing steady income growth to expansive estates bolstering the nation’s economy, the journey of tea farming in Kenya is one of remarkable prosperity.

  1. Brief History and Favorable Areas Where Tea Thrives in Kenya

Selecting the right parcel of land for your tea farming venture is a pivotal step in ensuring your success. Several key factors should guide your choice, with soil quality, elevation, and climate taking center stage. Soil quality plays a fundamental role in tea growth, as it directly impacts the flavor and quality of the leaves. Elevation determines the tea’s unique character, with higher altitudes often yielding sought-after premium teas. Climate, including rainfall and temperature patterns, significantly influences tea plant health and yield. Understanding and carefully considering these factors is essential to make an informed choice. With the right land, your tea farming endeavor can thrive, and at Lesama Limited, we’re here to help you navigate these considerations and secure the perfect piece of land to cultivate your dreams.

In 1903, Kenyan tea cultivation saw its inception with the introduction of the first tea seedlings, Camellia sinensis, by white settlers in Limuru, situated in Kiambu County. Initially, these tea bushes were cultivated on an experimental basis, and some of them have since matured into large trees, now forming a historical feature within what is known as Unilever’s Mabroukie Tea Estate. It’s worth noting that while a few private farmers had established small tea gardens in both Limuru and Kericho, it wasn’t until 1924 that commercial tea cultivation took root in Kenya.

Tea farming in Kenya primarily thrives in the highlands found within the West and East Rift, at elevations ranging from 1,500 meters to 2,700 meters above sea level. These highlands span across 19 tea-growing counties, including Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Nyamira, Kisii, Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans-Nzoia, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Meru.

The favorable conditions for tea cultivation in Kenya encompass tropical volcanic red soils and an advantageous climate characterized by well-distributed rainfall, ranging between 1200 mm to 1400 mm per annum. Notably, Kenya’s unique equatorial location allows for year-round tea production with minimal seasonal variations in quantity, setting it apart from many other tea-producing nations.

  1. Elevating Standards of Living for Small-Scale Farmers

Tea farming in Kenya has consistently proven to be a transformative force, particularly for small-scale farmers. According to the Tea Directorate of Kenya, the tea industry provides livelihoods for over 600,000 small-scale farmers across the country1. These dedicated individuals have experienced substantial improvements in their quality of life, with tea farming contributing significantly to their income stability and growth.

In fact, small-scale tea farmers have enjoyed consistent income from tea production throughout the year2. This stability can be attributed to the regularity of tea harvesting and the global demand for Kenyan tea, ensuring a steady stream of revenue. Furthermore, the potential for income growth is substantial, with tea exports being a significant contributor to Kenya’s foreign exchange earnings3. The continuous demand for Kenyan tea on the international market presents ample opportunities for small-scale farmers to expand their production and further elevate their standards of living.
